This is an attempt to merge two interests: using Celestia to display panoramas and 3D topographical maps of Philmont Scout Ranch.

This Zip file contains a Celestia Addon which provides a panoramic view from the top of the Tooth of Time and a 3D topographic display of the Tooth of Time Ridge on Philmont Scout Ranch.
The v3 update makes it easier to view the higher resolution images of the panorama if your graphics card supports them.
To learn how to install Celestia and to look at this panorama, please visit the Web page novice-panorama.html.
Background: One can use a 3D modelling program to construct a cylinder with the proportions required by the particular panoramic image. An advantage of this approach over using the interior of a sphere is that the surface texture image only has to contain the panorama itself, without empty borders. Here's an example where this has been done.

The panoramic photograph of the Tooth of Time was provided by Julian Love, BSA Troop 116, Mecklenburg County Council (Charlotte, NC) and is used with his permission.
The DEM model and topographical maps were created by the USGS. Selden Ball translated the USGS DEM into Celestia's CMOD format using 3DEM ( www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html) and a home-grown Fortran program. ImageMagick, netpbm and nvdxt were used to crop, scale and translate the USGS topo maps into JPEG and DDS formats. 3DEM, ImageMagick, netpbm and nvdxt are all free. See also: Selden's Philmont page.

Philmont Scout Ranch is a mountainous High Adventure Base run by the Boy Scouts of America. It's located in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico. More than 20,000 people visit it each year for 10 days of exploration, hiking and fun.

These Zip files contain a Celestia Addon which provides 3D models of the topography of Philmont Scout Ranch. You can use it to travel around the Ranch and view its mountains, valleys and camps.

philmont-topo-v1-01-lores.zip contains the working code of the Addon. It uses map images that are 1K on a side and is compatible with most graphics cards, as well as Microsoft's 3D graphics software drivers. v1-01 has been updated to include fixes for some minor problems encountered in v1. |

Do not bother downloading philmont-topo-v1-medres.zip unless you know your graphics card can use 2K or larger DDS/DXT textures. It will work on most of the recent ATI and Nvidia cards, for example. This medres Addon contains only some higher resolution topographical maps, and cannot be used by itself. Download and install the lores Addon first. |

just1.zip is a pathetic attempt to create a small version of this Addon that people can test before investing in the time to download the large, full resolution version. It contains just one low-resolution model and accompanying low resolution map of the entire area, representing all 12 of the models used in the large version. Because the 12 maps and models are shrunken so drastically, this map and model are quite unreadable. They only hint at what can be seen in the large version. This Addon does have all of the camp selection features of the large version, however. If you later decide to install philmont-topo-v1-01-lores.zip, you then should move just1's folder out of Celestia's extras folder. Otherwise, since both Addons are at the same location in New Mexico, there will be some visual confusion when the models are drawn on top of one another. |

The "7.5 minute" DEMs and topographic maps that this Addon is based on were created by the USGS.
With his permission, this Addon remotely accesses Dan Yoder's Trek Search Web site to provide information about the camp sites at Philmont. See http://www.danyoder.com/philmont/ for more information.
Camp locations obtained from Troop 445's GPS Waypoint database spreadsheet at http://home.comcast.net/~445philmont/philmontwaypoints.htm were used to position camp markers and names.
Information from Al Thomson's 2005 Treks Comparison (140KB .XLS spreadsheet) was used to develop the Trek Route scripts.
The script mark_staffed_camps.cel was generated using John Wisinger's list of staffed camps at http://yoda.freeservers.com/camps.html

If you have a slow network connection and would rather not download the entire 20MB at once, here are the components of the lores 3D Philmont. After installing the "root" portion, you can install and look at any one or more of the individual regions. You don't have to install all of them to start enjoying the view.
If you've already installed just1.zip, you probably should move its folder out of Celestia's extras folder. Otherwise, since both Addons are at the same location in New Mexico, there will be some visual confusion when the models are drawn on top of one another.
If you don't tell me that something's missing, unclear or wrong, I can't improve it.
