56Acts 17. A monument with a literal inscription “to an unknown god” has not been found, but the existence of altars dedicated to “unknown gods” has been confirmed.[85,86] The speech of the Apostle Paul in the Areopagus is not a verbatim transcript, but a free adaptation, which is why it bears the marks of Luke’s style. The apostle undoubtedly related its contents to his assistant. It contains a number of direct overlaps with Paul’s own thought, for example, in Rom 1:19–20.
