67Orthodoxy (from Greek: orthodoxĂa) is the correct teaching of the Church; heresy is a particular creed that deviates from the correct teaching of the Church. Since each heresy above all claims to be the true faith, the question of heresies in the history of the Church has always been decided by Councils rather than individual theologians. It should be borne in mind that Orthodoxy in this context does not merely equate to the present confession of the Eastern Church, which differs from the Roman Catholic Church, but to the common confession of the Church of the age of the Ecumenical Councils. In this sense, the confession of faith of the ancient Western Church may well be regarded as Orthodox.
