Linux is a professional quality Unix-compatible operating system running on IBM-PC, MAC, OSF1/Dec alpha, SUN platforms. It was created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Starting from x86 platform (386/486 AT) at the moment it cover more then 5% of the desktop-PC market and more then 50% Web-server. The official "logo" of Linux system is penguin.

Slackware - This is a one of the Linux distribution old-fashion linux distributions. I started my Linux/Unix experience from it in 1993 version 2.0. As to my knowlendge it is one of the most stable, well configured distribution. The main advantage is total flexibility in configuration since the main format is "tar-balls" (*.tar.gz or *.tgz).

RedHat - The most popular and most market successfull distribution of Linux. It has a very nice RPM package management, very usefull for beginners and impatient users. You should probably think to buy some RedHat stocks today. Distribution file format is *.rpm.

Caldera - is a nice distribution with office support. It is very spread in commercial world. Distribution file format is *.rpm.

Debian - The most "free" distribution. The Debian community is making a large effort to keep GNU free standard in their distribution. This distribution for advanced users who love Linux details. It has nice support throught the Internet. Distribution file format is *.deb.

SuSE - The most complete Linux distribution. It contains the largest number of Linux software packages in one single distribution. Very nice designed and supported (German quality). Distribution file format is *.rpm.
