30Paul is the only apostle whose appearance is remembered by tradition. The earliest evidence is contained in a fragment of the Apocryphal Acts of Paul, which is usually called the Acts of Paul and Thecla.[40] This apocrypha was probably written in the 2nd century and is based on historical tradition (see note on p. §). There is a substantial description of Paul’s appearance in the annals of the Byzantine historian John Malalas (the end of the 6th century).[41] Given that legends tend to embellish the appearance of prominent individuals, this realistic portrait can hardly be considered fictional.
